Much of a building's energy use is decided in the first sketch.
Why the sun path?
In Istanbul the noon sun stands at about 72° on 21 June and around 25° on 21 December. That difference means an eave that blocks summer sun can admit winter sun.
Process
- Draw the site's annual sun path diagram.
- Model the shadows of neighbouring buildings hour by hour.
- Compare massing options for thermal load and daylight.
